Position Overview

Behavioral Health Interventions of Greater St. Louis is seeking an energetic, diligent, self-motivated and articulate team player to join its team as a Associate Substance Abuse Counselor-PRACTICUM STUDENT. This position offers the opportunity to participate in a broad range of program operations as part of a professional, team-oriented organization.

The Associate Substance Abuse Counselor Practicum Student reports directly to the Program's Clinical Supervisor. The Case Management Specialist-(BSW)-PRACTICUM STUDENT will play a supportive-on role in the organization's day-to-day administration, working in close partnership with the organization's executive director and and the rest of the administrative team to carry out and manage the billing functions of the organization's activities to ensure effectiveness and efficiency.

The role involves direct involvement in the administrative oversight of processes at such pertains to the organization's, compliance and navigation of counseling and therapy practices which includes, but is not limited to ; serving as a technical and professional resource to the organization and with executive director oversight responsibility for billing operations of the organization including but not limited to the engagement of state, federal, and other program licensing/certification compliance,and communications related to therapy and counseling practices.

Applicants who have previous counseling and/or therapy experience as a licensed practitioner as it regards direct-clinical care, multi-program administration, and communications experience are preferred. A solid understanding of counseling therapies and related tasks and strategies is a requirement.
The position will begin mid-summer 2022 to assist the organization's president/CEO with specific tasks, which include creating/updating the billing administration portion of employee manuals and handbooks, event planning,transition correspondence, publication management and special projects related to Counseling, Therapy, and other related responsibilities. Details of responsibilites to be further defined upon hire. In 2022 and beyond, the role will be expanded as described. This position reports to the executive director.




Scope of Responsibilities



  • Establishes positive, trusting rapport with patients.

  • Diagnoses and treats mental health disorders.

  • Creates individualized treatment plans according to patient needs and circumstances.

  • Meets with patients regularly to provide counseling, treatment and adjust treatment plans as necessary.

  • Conducts ongoing assessments of patient progress.

  • Involves and advises family members when appropriate.

  • Refers patients to outside specialists or agencies when necessary.

  • Maintains thorough records of patient meetings and progress.

  • Follows all safety protocols and maintains client confidentiality.

  • Contributes to practice by accomplishing related tasks as needed.

  • Desired Qualifications



  • Master’s degree in Counseling or Social Work and 5-7 years of relevant experience.

  • Experience in direct clincial interventions preferably in a mental health setting
  • .
  • Knowledge of best practices legal, as well as state and federal regulatory requirements for licensure and funding.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Clinical Environment Management software and familiarity with specific evidence-based interventions, including preparation of data displays and reports.

  • Salary and Application Information



    Salary range is $42,000-$50,000 FTE, depending on qualifications and experience. Excellent benefits include health, dental and 401(k) retirement plan. Position begins as soon as possible.



    A Therapist Practicum Student should have the following skills and qualifications to be successful in their role:

  • Good organization, time management and scheduling skills.

  • Basic billing code experience, especially in the healthcare community

  • Experiencing using office management software, including word processing software and spreadsheets

  • diligent familiarity with billing and coding procedures

  • Strong communication skills

  • Ability to multitask



  • The position will begin mid-summer 2014 to assist the organization's president/CEO with specific tasks, which include creating/updating accounting protocals in the policy and procedure manuals and handbooks, event planning,transition correspondence, publication management and the accounting aspect of special projects as well as those related to grantmaking. Responsibilities to be further defined upon hire. In 2021 and beyond, the role will be expanded as described. This position reports to the executive director.
